BESM Fourth Edition Heading to Press in December!

BESM TO PRINT

We are pleased to announce that BESM Fourth Edition and expansions have been approved for printing! Repeat: we are go for printing.

Here’s how the production timing looks: Over the next week, we will be preparing files for press and sending them to our printer. They will turn around samples for approval and then bulk production will take place after that. Due to the December holidays, we anticipate printing will be completed by the end of January. Kickstarter and Pledgemanager backers who selected express shipping will likely receive their rewards in early February, with the remainder backers receiving theirs in late March or early April (depending on customs clearance).

Our timeline for PDF distribution is faster. After files have been sent to press, we will do a second PDF output optimized for DriveThruRPG. Consequently, all Kickstarter and Pledgemanager backers will receive their base PDF pledges within the next couple of weeks. Stretch goal PDFs will be sent to backers as they are approved and available.

Thank you once again for your patience as we work hard to ensure the BESM Fourth Edition launch provides everything you expect. Interact easily with BESM and Dyskami by following along through numerous channels, including our web forums, Facebook page, and BESM Facebook Group.

BESM 4 Kickstarter Has a New Date

BESM RPG

Sometimes, inevitable delays happen despite careful planning. Today has been quite a surprise.

The BESM Role-Playing Game Fourth Edition will unfortunately not launch on July 2nd as we had announced, but rather has been pushed back for several days due to circumstances beyond our control. We have been assured that the delay is temporary. Consequently, the new launch date for the Kickstarter is Tuesday, July 9th at 12 noon EDT.

Thank you so very much to all of our supporters, who have been anxiously awaiting the BESM 4 Kickstarter launch. We are terribly sorry about this delay and look forward to launching BESM Fourth Edition next week instead.

Tri-Stat System Logo

BESM RPG

Since the First Edition of Big Eyes, Small Mouth in 1997, the game mechanics that supports BESM has been called the Tri-Stat System (in reference to just three core States — Body, Mind, and Soul — used in the game). In addition to its use in the BESM line, versions of the Tri-Stat System have formed the foundation of numerous related role-playing games, including Silver Age Sentinels and Tri-Stat dX, as well as many licensed RPGs covering Sailor Moon, Tench Muyo!, El Hazard, The Slayers, The Authority, Ghost Dog, and more.

BESM Role-Playing Game Fourth Edition (and the stripped-down BESM Naked) presents the pinnacle evolution of the Tri-Stat System — the One Ring to Rule Them All, so to speak. With BESM’s relaunch, we created a new Tri-Stat System logo that evokes the central strengths of the game. That is, diverse friends and strangers sitting together and collaboratively creating an exceptional role-playing adventure experience. Depth and symbolism abound in the new Tri-Stat System logo, which reflects Dyskami Publishing’s modern vision for the BESM system and future games.

BESM Fourth Edition launches on Kickstarter on July 9th, so sign up to our mailing list by filling out the form to the right (desktop) or below (mobile) and follow our social accounts!

BESM Naked — A Stripped-Down Version of Fourth Edition

BESM RPG

It’s time we revealed a little secret about the our upcoming BESM Role-Playing Game Fourth Edition launch: BESM 4 is actually two distinct games. In addition to the standard Fourth Edition, we are also releasing a stripped-down core game called BESM Naked that a complete, stand-alone, alternate edition.

BESM Naked will be presented as a “gateway product” of a sorts, targeted at anime and manga fans who may know something about role-playing but aren’t traditional gamers. It’s also for role-playing enthusiasts who enjoy indie-style RPGs with simple rules and more narrative game flow. With a structural simplicity closer to BESM First Edition from 1997 — yet presented with an eye on illustration and graphic design that lives up to the expectations of today’s gamers — BESM Naked contains everything you need to play, wrapped in one small volume at an attractive price.

And as you can tell from the cover illustrations of the two games, we had some play-on-words fun with the titles!

BESM RPG - Two Covers

Big Ideas, Small Book

With a unique, simultaneous approach to publishing two new RPG core books in a way that’s never been tried before, you might ask us “Why are you doing this?”

  • The standard BESM Fourth Edition is an excellent game that reflects the pinnacle evolution of its Tri-Stat System, though some players still prefer the simple elegance of BESM First Edition. Not everyone wants comprehensive rules with robust options; some people just want to play an easier storytelling game and enjoy a more-descriptive and less-mechanistic system.

  • Although BESM Naked doesn’t contain all the specific details and options of BESM 4e, the two core rulebook are highly compatible and integrate together comfortably.

  • We know that many anime and manga fans like to role-play (and cosplay) at conventions, and they may be inclined to play more often if a game was released that matched their interests and expectations. BESM Naked presents an intuitive rule system that’s easy to understand, and consequently it might be the exact product that turns otaku into gamers.

  • Same Game, Fewer Rules

We can best illustrate the differences between standard BESM Fourth Edition and BESM Naked with a sample Attribute entry from each product:

    Jumping [BESM 4e version]
    Cost: 1 Point/Level
    Relevant Stat: Body

With a running start, a character can normally jump a distance in metres approximately equal to three-quarters their Body Stat (a quarter their Body Stat from a static position). With this Attribute, the character can jump great distances (and land without injury) but cannot actually fly. Jumping does not enable a character to exceed the character’s normal maximum running speed (or swimming speed for aquatic characters capable of leaping). Consequently, unless the character also possesses the appropriate Level of the Superspeed Attribute (page ???), long-distance jumps may require several round or minutes.

For example, a character with a Body Stat of 6 can normally sprint 18 metres/round (Body Stat x 3; see Character Movement) and jump approximately 4.5 metres with a running start. If the character with Level 2 Jumping (10 times the normal distance, or 45 metres) jumps their maximum distance of 45 metres, they will be airborne for approximately three rounds rather than finishing the jump in just one (since 45 ÷ 18 is approximately 3 rounds). The advantage to jumping rather than running, however, is that the character can ignore terrain and is not fatigued as the character would be if they had to run the same distance. See Jumping Distance for additional jumping rules.

  • Level 1 Jump up to 3 times normal distance
  • Level 2 Jump up to 10 times normal distance
  • Level 3 Jump up to 30 times normal distance
  • Level 4 Jump up to 100 times normal distance
  • Level 5 Jump up to 300 times normal distance
  • Level 6 Jump up to 1,000 times normal distance

  • Jumping (1) [BESM Naked version]

You can leap much farther distances than normal characters (and land without injury).

  • Level 1 Substantial distance
  • Level 2 Great distance
  • Level 3 Remarkable distance
  • Level 4 Fantastic distance
  • Level 5 Incredible distance
  • Level 6 Spectacular distance

    S3 Expansion: Villain Abilities

    Witches Abilities

Yesterday, we took at look at the Pretty Guardians team special abilities in the upcoming Season 3 expansion for Sailor Moon Crystal Dice Challenge. Last week, we explored the Witches Five Summon Daimon ability. Today, we finish the reveal of the Season 3 villain special abilities, covering Kaolinite (Magus Power ability), Cyprine and Ptilol (Split Attack ability) and the frightning Mistress 9 (Taioron Crystal).

    Profile: Magus Power Ability

The Magus-ranked commander of the Death Busters is highly talented at deception in combat. Before making an attack, Kaolinite can swap the values on one of her dice with the value on a similarly sized opponent’s die. For example, if Kaolinte shows a 4 on her d20 and her opponent shows a 16 on their d20, Kaolinte can swap the two values so she has the 16 and her opponent has the 4. After the swap is complete, Kaolinite must make a Power Attack (not Skill Attack) using the die with the swapped value but she cannot target the opponent’s die with which she just swapped. Continuing the above example, her opponent’s d20 (that now shows a 4) cannot be the target of Kaolinite’s Power Attack.

    Profile: Split Attack Ability

Cyprine of the Witches 5 can split to create her twin, Ptilol. Before making an attack, Cyprine can replace any one of her current dice with two dice that have half the number of faces. For example, Cyprine can replace her d8 with two d4s, her d12 with two d6s, or her d20 with two d10s. The larger replaced die is removed from the game for the current round; the two new dice are rolled when they are brought into play then placed with the remaining Starting Dice. Cyprine cannot replace a die if she does not have access to two dice exactly half-sized. For example, a d10 cannot be split into two d5s because d5s are not available (though upon advanced player agreement, non-standard dice with a diverse number of faces may be added to the game to allow such die splits). At the end of the round, any split and replaced dice are returned to normal before the next round.

    Profile: Taioron Crystal Ability

Mistress 9 can access the power of the Taioron Crystal to gain strength from an opponent. Whenever she re-rolls a 1 on one or more large dice (with 10, 12, or 20 faces) after an attack, Mistress 9 immediately re-rolls the die again (and potentially multiple times) until it no longer shows a value of 1. Afterwards, Mistress 9 can transform any single one of her opponent’s remaining Reserve Dice into a new Starting Dice for her own use immediately. The chosen die must be rolled when it is first brought into play and then placed with Mistress 9’s remaining Starting Dice. At the end of the round, the temporary die is transformed back into a Reserve Die and returned to Mistress 9’s opponent.

Which two characters are going to be in your first match-up when you get your hands on the Season 3 expansion later this spring? Pre-order your copy of the Sailor Moon Dice Challenge Season 3 expansion today and you'll be bumped to the front of the shipping line!

    S3 Expansion: Guardian Abilities

    Guardian Abilities

Just like in the base Sailor Moon Crystal Dice Challenge game, each of the characters in the upcoming Season 3 expansion also has a special ability that can be used when appropriate during the match to help ensure victory. These various abilities are represented by icons on the character cards and are described in the expansion rules in detail. The number of times a special ability can be used during a match is indicated by the number next to the ability icon; if no number is indicated, the character’s ability functions continuously. To represent the various abilities, place one or more of the corresponding cardboard tokens in front of the characters during play and put a token aside every time you use the ability.

Let’s take a look at the special abilities of the five characters on the Pretty Guardians team: the Talisman Power of three Outer Guardians (Sailor Uranus, Sailor Neptune, and Sailor Pluto), Sailor Saturn's Silence Glaive ability, and Luna P's Mimic Dice ability.

    Profile: Talisman Power Ability

The Pretty Guardians of the Outer Planets can use their powerful Talismans to provide protection during battle. After you have re-rolled your die or dice from an attack, you can target one of the opponent’s dice to “lock it” throughout the duration of their next turn, which prevents the chosen die from being used in a Power or Skill Attack. You cannot use a Talisman Power if your opponent has only a single die currently remaining in play. After your opponent’s next turn is complete, the die unlocks and returns to normal.

    Profile: Silence Glaive Ability

Once Sailor Saturn starts powering up, her Guardian strength has the potential to continue growing tremendously. Whenever Sailor Saturn re-rolls the highest possible value on any dice that were just used in a Power or Skill Attack (for example, rolling a 20 on a d20 or 6 on a d6), she immediately brings in an extra die of that same size from the supply (in the above examples, bringing in an extra d20 or an extra d6). The extra die must be rolled when it is first brought into play and then placed with the remaining Starting Dice. At the round’s end, any temporary bonus dice gained this way are returned to supply.

    Profile: Mimic Dice Ability >

Sailor Chibi Moon’s beloved Luna P is a master of imitation. Before making an attack, Luna P can change any one die value to match the value showing on a similarly sized opponent’s die. For example, if Luna P currently has a 3 on its d10 and is battling an opponent showing a 9 on their d10, Luna P can change its 3 to a 9 before making a Skill Attack (not Power Attack) that must include the die that Luna P just changed.

Tomorrow, we will take a look at the villain abilities in more detail (in addition to the Witches Five Summon Daimon ability already revealed last week).

Do you want to ensure you're amongst the first to receive a copy of these new characters later this spring? Pre-order your copy of the Sailor Moon Dice Challenge Season 3 expansion today!

    Season 3 Expansion: Summoning Daimon

    Daimon Ability

Just like in the base Sailor Moon Crystal Dice Challenge game, each of the characters in the upcoming Season 3 expansion also has a special ability that can be used when appropriate during the match to help ensure victory. These various abilities are represented by icons on the character cards and are described in the rules in detail. To represent the various abilities, place one or more of the corresponding cardboard tokens in front of the characters during play and put a token aside every time you use the ability.

This expansion includes a dynamic game option with the Summon Daimon ability that is exhibited by Eudial, Mimete, Viluy, and Tellu of the Witches 5 (Cyprine and Ptilol have their own unique Split Attack ability instead).

    Profile: Summon Daimon Special Ability

The Witches 5 can plant Daimon eggs in nearby living hosts, summoning powerful Daimon to aid them in battle. This ability can only be used if you have at least two or more dice currently in play and cannot be used if you are down to your last die. Before making an attack, you must convert one of your available dice – the one currently showing the highest value – into a Reserve Die. The sizes of the dice are irrelevant; convert the die with the highest value showing. The converted die is removed from your play area and placed into your pile of Reserve Dice. All your remaining combat dice are then temporarily set aside while your summoned Daimon battles on your behalf.

Take the large Daimon token from supply and place it in your play area, along with the Daimon’s three combat dice from supply: d4, d6, and d8. Roll the Daimon’s dice for its starting roll when it first appears. Until the opponent’s final die or the Daimon’s final die is captured, the Daimon now battles your opponent as if it was a normal character under your control. It’s still your turn immediately after summoning the Daimon, so you must now make either a Power Attack or Skill Attack with the Daimon’s dice if you can. Then your opponent takes their turn as usual during combat. Regular battle rules apply.

While the Daimon is fighting, your original Witches 5 character stands on the sidelines watching the battle unfold and does not engage in combat directly with your opponent. If the Daimon captures your opponent’s final die, the round is over. If your opponent captures the Daimon’s last die, it has served its purpose and you now return to the combat using the exact same dice and values as when you summoned the Daimon and left the play area temporarily. Of course, your opponent is likely much weaker after battling the Daimon, giving you a better path to victory. It’s now your turn to attack.

As usual, the round is over when one player captures their opponent’s last die (or the Daimon’s last die). For scoring, your opponent receives points equal to the number of sides on captured dice from both you and the Daimon (gaining a maxium of 18 points specifically associated with defeating the Daimon, capturing its d4, d6, and d8). If the Daimon ended the round by capturing your opponent’s final die, you do not receive any points for the Daimon’s dice that were not captured. You still receive points awarded for your own uncaptured dice (equal to half the number of sides on the dice, as usual), but gain no points from the Daimon’s uncaptured dice.

The die that you converted into a Reserve Die when summoning the Daimon is not automatically reverted back to a Starting Die at the end of the round. It now remains a Reserve Die until the end of the match or until you convert it back into a Starting Die as normal should you lose a round of battle and select that Reserve Die to reassign.

Will you be ready to throw down in a Season 3 battle yourself later this spring? Pre-order your copy of the Sailor Moon Dice Challenge Season 3 expansion today!

    Remembering Jeff Mackintosh

    Jeff Mackintosh

Today, we want to pay tribute to our dear friend and graphic designer of Sailor Moon Crystal Dice Challenge, Jeff Mackintosh, because we think it's important to understand the passion behind the game. As we had posted previously, Jeff passed away in September 2016 after his long and courageous battle with cancer.

I first met Jeff at a nightclub in Columbus, Ohio in 1999 during the Origins Game Fair convention. Jeff was a graphic designer for a small RPG company in Montreal, Quebec and my own RPG company, Guardians Of Order, was expanding after the success of our Sailor Moon Role-Playing Game and Resource Book and BESM anime RPG. After talking for hours, I asked him what it would take to get him to move to Guelph and join my company. Jeff answered with, “I dunno, why not offer me a job and find out?” That was the start of our first time working together and we created some tremendous products as a team (earning numerous Origins Awards, nominations, and industry accolades for graphic design).

Fast forward to 2012. Jeff was once again working in Montreal as a graphic designer and I was focused on real estate. I had an itch to return to the adventuring gaming industry to create board games but couldn’t do it without a great team behind me. I contacted Jeff to see if he was interested in working as our graphic designer once again and he jumped at the chance. Upon a Fable was our first game release under Dyskami Publishing and soon our attention turned to obtaining the Sailor Moon Crystal license for producing a line of tabletop games. Jeff and I were excited about what the future would hold.

Working with Jeff was always an adventure. He was meticulous in his craft, never satisfied with just “good enough” when it came to function and form in his graphic design. He was a gamer geek and thoroughly enjoyed working in the gaming industry, where he made a plethora of friends. When his terminal cancer diagnosis came in 2014, my heart broke.

Jeff endured two years of treatment as his health team worked to halt or slow the effects. Jeff was insistent that he continue working on Dyskami’s projects during that time, wanting to retain as much normalcy in his life as possible. Whereas some people would have simply given up, Jeff doubled down on his graphic design work and produced some beautiful products with Warband: Against the Darkness and Sailor Moon Crystal Dice Challenge. He never stopped wanting to contribute. At the very end when I visited him in hospice, he was still formulating plans about how he could continue working on additional projects. Set up his computer next to his bed, he said, and he’d work on the next Sailor Moon Crystal game for me. Sadly, Sailor Moon Crystal Dice Challenge was the last game he completed.

I smile every time I play Sailor Moon Crystal Dice Challenge because I get to immerse myself in Jeff’s passion and remember the years we spent together as friends and coworkers. I miss hanging out with Jeff and will carry him with me always.

    Dice Challenge Tournaments

    Dice Challenge Tournaments

Did you know that Sailor Moon Crystal Dice Challenge includes tournament rules as well? Tournament play is an ideal activity to play at anime/gaming/fandom conventions, at a local game store/cafe, or with any large gathering of family or friends ... or even strangers. Rather than team play as outlined in the two earlier scenarios (Single Combat Teams and Tag-Team Combats), tournament play is a series of individual 1-on-1 matches as described in the regular rules, while keeping track of the overall net number of victories for each player throughout the tournament.

    Victory Tokens and Dice

Every player starts the tournament with the same number of identifiable tokens that will be used to track victories. The tournament organisers need to supply the tokens; generic poker/bingo chips are ideal, though any small items available in sufficient quantities will work. Between 5 and 10 tokens is a reasonable number for each player. Additionally, all players should bring their own character (or characters) to play and have enough polyhedral dice to fulfil those required by their chosen character(s).

    Duration

The tournament organisers will set a duration for the tournament. For small gatherings up to 10 players, one hour is recommended. At larger gatherings where players may come and go at different times, the tournament may stretch over a number of hours ... or even days for extended play at a convention.

    Battle Challenges

While the tournament is underway, any player can challenge any other player to a combat duel, though any player has the option of refusing to accept a duel for any reason. Players can even battle each other multiple times during the tournament. All normal game rules apply. Both players select, in secret, which character they will play and then simultaneously reveal the character identities to each other. If both players selected the same character, the players chose new characters in secret again; alternatively, if they both agree, they can instead battle each other with the same characters (which could be explained as a magical doppelganger fight!). The characters then battle each other over multiple combat rounds until one character wins 3 rounds (best 3 out of 5) and claims the match.

    Tracking Victories

The player who lost the match must give one of their special tournament victory tokens to the winner. If that player continues to lose matches and eventually runs out of tournament tokens, they drop out of the tournament and can no longer participate in matches with other players. At the end of the tournament duration (or before, if one player holds all the tournament tokens), the player in possession of the most number of victory tokens is declared the tournament champion!

We have updated the downloadable rule book PDF to include these tournament rules. In the name of the mooon, you should pre-order your copy of Sailor Moon Dice Challenge today.

    Tag-Team Combat Rules

    Tag-Team Combat Rules

We previously talked about how groups of Sailor Moon Crystal Dice Challenge players can use Single Combat Team rules to engage in multi-player battles. In this post, we talk about an alternative team play rule called Tag-Team Combats.

    Lots of Dice Needed

For tag-team dice challenges, every character must have their full complement of Starting Dice and Reserve Dice before the battle begins (for most characters, that’s 8 dice total). Consequently, tag-teams can only be played if players combine multiple game sets or add their own extra polyhedral dice. Like single combat team play, tag-team combats work best with an even number of players so they can divide themselves into two equal teams.

    Beginning the Game

At the beginning of the match, players roll the Starting Dice for each character. The one character with the lowest dice rolls from each team are moved into the centre of the play area and will begin the match battling each other. All characters with higher dice rolls keep their Starting Dice values to use when they eventually enter the combat later in the round.

    Tagging In

The combat progresses as with normal gameplay, with each side taking turns performing Power Attacks or Skill Attacks to capture the opponent’s dice. On a character’s turn, instead of performing an attack (or if the character is unable to attack) the character can optionally withdraw from combat and trade places with any other teammate of the player’s choice waiting on the sidelines (called “tagging in” a teammate). The character withdrawing to the sidelines retains their dice number and values for when they return to combat later in the round. The new arriving character – who enters combat with the number of dice and corresponding dice face values established earlier – does not get to perform an attack that round; in effect, the team tagging in a teammate lose the opportunity to attack for one round as they trade places. Combat continues between the new character and the opponent who was already in the battle area.

    Defeat and Replacement

If a character’s final die is ever captured by an opponent and is thus defeated, they are removed from combat – after the opponent has rerolled the attack dice as normal – and a teammate of the defeated player’s choice is immediately tagged in (with the dice and values previously established). Unlike a voluntary withdrawal described earlier, though, the character stepping in for a defeated opponent does not miss a turn and performs a Power or Skill Attack immediately upon entering combat.

    Special Abilities

Under tag-team combat rules, the special abilities of all characters on a team are combined and available for any teammate to use when actively engaged in combat with an opponent (up to the maximum number of times they can be used as normally indicated). For example, if Sailor Venus, Tuxedo Mask, and Princess Serenity are on one team and Sailor Venus is currently battling Wiseman, she can use her Planet Power ability (to take another turn once a match), Tuxedo Mask’s Defender ability (to protect one target die from attack twice each match), or Princess Serenity’s Legendary Silver Crystal ability (to temporarily bring in a Reserve Die once each match) during her battle as she sees fit.

    Scoring the Battle

Combat continues over multiple turns – with many repeated withdrawals/tag ins and character defeats on both sides – until the final opponent is defeated and only a single character is still in play with Starting Dice remaining. Calculate the combined point total of each team (rather than for individual characters) for both captured and retained dice as usual. The team with the higher score wins the round and claims a victory token.

    Reserve Dice

All dice are returned to their respective characters and everything is reset as usual before the next combat round begins. The characters on the losing team for the previous round decide which one of their teammates then gets to convert a Reserve Die to a Starting Die before the next round begins, regardless of their order of defeat.

    Team Victory

The first team to claim 3 victory tokens (best 3 out of 5 rounds) wins the match. For longer tag-team battles, players may decided to require 4, 5, or more victory tokens to win the match.

We have updated the downloadable rule book PDF to include these Tag-Team Combat rules. Check back for our next article about running game tournaments. It’s a great day to pre-order your copy of Sailor Moon Dice Challenge, so be sure to secure your copy.

    Single Combat Team Rules

    Single Combat Team Rules

The previous rules outline gameplay that involves two players each controlling a single character, which is the standard method of play. With only slight modifications to the game flow, you can also play the Sailor Moon Crystal Dice Challenge game with 4 or more players and each player assuming the roles of one or more characters. In this post, we are going talk about the Single Combat Team rules.

    Number of Players

Team play under the Single Combat rules works best with an even number of players (4, 6, or 8), with each player selecting a single character to play and dividing into two teams. For an odd number of players, one player will need to control two characters since there should be an equal number of characters on each team. Alternatively, two players can fight with teams (as opposed to the normal 1-on-1 matches), with each player assuming the roles of 2, 3, or 4 characters each.

    First Round

After characters are selected and teams determined, each team simultaneously nominates one character to start the battle. The two chosen characters fight a single round of combat as outlined in the standard rules. The winner of the round (the character with the higher point total) gains one victory token for their team. Each team then selects a new character of their choice to battle in the next round.

    Reserve Dice

The new character representing the team that lost the battle in the previous round – rather than the character that actually lost the fight – additionally may convert one Reserve Die to a new Starting Die as normal for that character for the remainder of the match. If this character returns to fight in a later round immediately after a teammate has lost again, the character not only retains the first converted Reserve Die in their Starting Dice pool (since once a Reserve Die is converted it remains in the Starting Dice pool until the match is over) but now may convert a second Reserve Die to a Starting Die due to the team’s recent loss. If instead this character returns to the fight in a later round immediately after a teammate had won the round, no additional Reserve Dice are converted (only the first converted Reserve Die is retained) because Reserve Dice are only converted by the team that just lost the combat round.

    Victory Tokens

The pairings of single combats between characters continues over several rounds until one team has enough victory tokens to win the match. For 2-on-2 battles, the first team to earn 4 victory tokens wins the match (best 4 out of 7); for 3-on-3 battles, the winning team needs 5 victory tokens (best 5 out of 9); for 4-on-4 battles, the winning team needs 6 victory tokens (best 6 out of 11). To ensure fairness to all players, it is recommended that all players/characters on each team fight at least one round of combat during each match.

    Special Abilities

Under single combat team rules, each character can use their special ability as appropriate but only when they are actively engaged in combat with an opponent (and not when waiting on the sidelines).

We have updated the downloadable rule book PDF to include these Single Combat Team rules. In the next article, we will discuss an alternative way to engage in multi-player battles. If you haven’t already done so, pre-order your copy of Sailor Moon Dice Challenge today!

    Special Abilities

    The Portable Social Tabletop Game

Previously, we gave an overview of the rules for the Sailor Moon Crystal Dice Challenge game and talked about the symbols and information included on the 24 character cards. Each of the characters also has a special ability that can be used when appropriate during the match to help ensure victory. These various abilities are represented by icons on the character cards and are described in the rules in detail. The number of times a special ability can be used during a match is indicated by the number next to the ability icon; if no number is indicated, the character’s ability functions continuously. To represent the various abilities, place one or more of the corresponding cardboard tokens in front of the characters during play and put a token aside every time you use the ability.

Let’s take a look at the special abilities of two groups of opponents from the first season of Sailor Moon Crystal: the Pretty Guardians and Dark Kingdom Generals.

    Profile: Pretty Guardians Special Ability

The five Pretty Guardian characters (Sailor Moon, Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter, and Sailor Venus) each possess the Planet Power special ability, which allows them to call upon their willpower once in each match only after you have re-rolled your die or dice from a Power or Skill Attack but before your opponent takes their next turn. Through sheer force of will, your Pretty Guardians character can take another turn immediately before your opponent has time to act (effectively, your opponent misses a turn and you take two in a row).

Profile: Dark Kingdom Generals Special Ability

The four generals of the Dark Kingdom (Jadeite, Zoisite, Nephrite, and Kunzite) can use their mystical powers to make a second alternate roll with any single die that was used in a Power or Skill Attack. After you have re-rolled all of the dice used in an attack as you normally would, you may decide that you do not like the new value showing on one die (for example, a roll of 2 on a d20) and wish to re-roll it. Each general can use the Dark Kingdom ability three times in each match. Any single attack die can be re-rolled, but each die must be re-rolled before your opponent takes their turn. You can even re-roll a die that you have just re-rolled, but it will use up one more of your three available times.

    The Portable Social Tabletop Game

    Detailed Example of Play

We have updated the downloadable rule book PDF to include a detailed combat example between Sailor Mercury and Kunzite. The example demonstrates the entire range of game events, including: starting rolls, Power Attacks, Skill Attacks, Reserve Dice, and the use of special abilities.

    Dice Challenge Rules

    The Portable Social Tabletop Game

Recently we talked about the anatomy of a character card so you’ll understand the game components of the Sailor Moon Crystal Dice Challenge. Today we’ll focus on explaining the rules of the game to you.

    Overview

Each player selects one of the 24 included Sailor Moon Crystal series characters to play, which includes the Pretty Guardians, their allies, the Dark Kingdom villains, and the Black Moon clan. You and an opponent use your selected characters to battle each other in several rounds of combat. During the game, both of you are rolling dice and trying to use the numbers rolled to capture your opponent’s dice and gain points. The first person to win three rounds wins the game (best 3 out of 5).

    Starting the Game

You and your opponent should each gather your character’s dice into a Starting Dice group and a Reserve Dice group. Then you both roll all of your characters’ respective Starting Dice, called a “starting roll”. Whoever rolled the single lowest number will go first. Let’s assume that's you. On your turn, you must make either a Power Attack or a Skill Attack with the dice if you can.

    Power Attack

Use one of your dice to “capture” one of your opponent’s dice. The value showing on your die must be greater than or equal to the value showing on the die you capture. The sizes (number of sides) of the two dice is irrelevant — only the values shown on the dice matter. For example, if you roll a 2 on your d8, you can make a Power Attack against your opponent’s d20 if they had only rolled a 1 or 2. When you capture a die, you take it out of play and place it next to the game area in your victory pile. You must now re-roll the die that you used to capture your opponent’s die before ending your turn.

    Skill Attack

You can alternatively use two or more of your dice to capture one single die from your opponent. In this different type of attack, the values showing on your dice must add up exactly to the value showing on the die you wish to capture from your opponent. Again, the sizes of the dice are irrelevant — only the values showing on the dice matter. For example, if you roll a 5 on your d8 and a 2 on your d10, you can use a Skill Attack to capture any single die from your opponent that shows a value of 7 (since 5+2=7). Take the captured die out of play, place it into your victory pile, and re-roll all of the dice you used in the Skill Attack to do the capturing.

    Alternating Turns

After you have finished doing either a single Power Attack or a single Skill Attack, your turn is now over. It’s time for your opponent to take their game turn, though they now have one less die to use in a Power Attack or Skill Attack (since you just captured one of them). Then you and your opponent take turns going back and forth, capture dice and re-rolling until the end of the round.

    Passing

You may not pass or forfeit your turn unless you cannot make either a Power Attack or a Skill Attack. In this instance, your opponent takes another turn. When your opponent re-rolls their dice after this new attack, check to see if you can take a turn now that your opponent’s dice values may have changed. If not, you must pass again.

    End Game and Scoring

When you capture your opponent’s last die, or your opponent captures your last die, the round is over. Your score is calculated as follows: for each die you captured (they are in your victory pile), you receive points equal to the number of sides on the die. For example a captured 12-sided die in your victory pile is worth 12 points. You also receive points for each of your own dice that were not captured by your opponent, if any remain. The points awarded for uncaptured dice equal half the number of sides on the dice. For example, if your 10-sided die was not captured, you receive 5 points. Your opponent calculates their points in the same way. Values shown on the dice are not relevant; only the number of sides score points.
Compare your total number of points (the “score”) to your opponent’s point total. The person with the higher score wins the round and takes one victory token. If you and your opponent have a tied score, replay the round. Note that only the final point total counts, rather than the determination of which character still has Starting Dice remaining at the end of the round. The first player to win 3 out of 5 rounds — and thus has earned at least three victory tokens — wins the match! Don’t forget (as the previous article mentioned) that the player that lost a round gets to add one of their Reserve Dice to their Starting Dice pool before the next round begins.

    Summary

For your convenience, we have uploaded a PDF of the pages from the game’s rulebook that includes everything from these two most recent blog posts. In the next article, we will talk about the special abilities that each character has that gives them distinct advantages during battles, so be sure to check back. And of course, be sure to pre-order your copy of Sailor Moon Dice Challenge today and get ready to battle this spring!

    Anatomy of a Character Card

    The Portable Social Tabletop Game

For those of you unfamiliar with the game mechanics of Sailor Moon Crystal Dice Challenge, we thought we would deconstruct the elements of one of the character game cards for you. For this tutorial, let’s look at the Sailor Moon card.

    Starting Dice

In the top right corner are four white numbers printed over red polyhedral dice shapes. These are Sailor Moon’s Starting Dice. Both the numbers and the shapes represent the types of dice (number of faces) that are in her Starting Dice pool. Sailor Moon has two 8-sided dice, one 10-sided die, and one 20-sided die. The names of these dice types are abbreviated to d8, d10, and d20 (or “dX”, where X is the number of sides). The variety of polyhedral dice used in the game include d1 (always a value of 1), d2 (like a coin; generates a value of either 1 or 2), d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20.

Smaller dice with fewer sides such as d4s and d6s typically reflect a character’s speed (like the athletic Sailor Venus) or special attacks that do not deliver much damage (like Sailor Mercury’s “Mercury Aqua Mist” attack). Larger dice such as d12s and d20s represent a character’s great strength (like the powerful Sailor Jupiter) or special attacks that deliver a lot of damage (like Sailor Moon’s “Moon Princess Halation”). Sailor Moon’s Starting Dice reflect that she is more powerful than she is fast, but is overall decently balanced. Starting Dice are the primary dice used in the game and are always the dice that the player rolls during the first round.

    Reserve Dice

Below the Starting Dice are Sailor Moon’s Reserve Dice, represented as red text on yellow polyhedral dice shapes. Sailor Moon’s Reserve Dice are d6, d10, d12, and d20. You will always play the game with the Starting Dice but will only use some of the Reserve Dice under special circumstances. Whenever you lose a game round to your opponent (a match is best 3 out of 5 rounds), you may move any one of your character’s Reserve Dice into your Starting Dice group for the next round (the same rule applies to your opponent after they lose a round). When the next round begins, you will now have one extra die to use during play. This reassignment of Reserve Dice to Starting Dice applies to any round and once a Reserve Die is converted to a Starting Die, it remains in play as a Starting Die for every subsequent round until the match is over.

For example, you know that Sailor Moon’s Starting Dice in the first round are d8, d8, d10, and d20 (a total of four dice). If Sailor Moon loses the first round, you can choose one of her Reserve Dice (d6, d10, d12, or d20) to add to her Starting Dice. If you select the d20, Sailor Moon’s Starting Dice for the second round are now d8, d8, d10, d20, and d20 (a total of five dice). If Sailor Moon is having a bad day and also loses the second round, you can add another die from her remaining Reserve Dice (d6, d10, and d12) to her Starting Dice. If you select the d6 this time, Sailor Moon’s Starting Dice for the third round are d6, d8, d8, d10, d20, and d20 (a total of 6 dice).

    Special Abilities

Each of the characters also has a special ability that can be used when appropriate during the match to help ensure victory. These various abilities are represented by icons in the bottom left of the character cards (accompanied with a brief name and description). The number of times a special ability can be used during a match is indicated by the number next to the ability icon; if no number is indicated, the character’s ability functions continuously.

Sailor Moon’s special ability, for example, is her Planet Power. This ability allows Sailor Moon to call upon her willpower once in each match to take another turn immediately before your opponent has time to act (effectively, your opponent misses a turn and you take two in a row).

    Summary

Now that you understand the contents of the character cards, we will teach you the simple game mechanics in a future post … so stay tuned! If you haven’t pre-ordered the Sailor Moon Dice Challenge yet, be sure to visit our ordering page and secure a copy for yourself. (PS. Don’t forget that pre-ordering the game for a loved one makes a wonderfully romantic Valentine’s Day gift as well!)

SAILOR MOON CRYSTAL DICE CHALLENGE - The Portable Social Tabletop Game

    The Portable Social Tabletop Game

If you read our previous article about the origins of Sailor Moon Crystal Dice Challenge you’ll understand how the underlying Button Men game was originally designed as a portable and social game that was ideal for playing at game conventions and other gamer gatherings.

The problems with the original button design are two-fold. First, they are expensive to produce. In 2000, a set of two Sailor Moon Button Men buttons with rules (but no dice) sold for $6 USD. The entire set of 24 characters cost $72 … and you’d have to supply your own dice! Secondly, the limited space on buttons means they have fewer graphic design opportunities to look awesome.

To release the entire set of 24 characters in a single product, we knew the characters had to appear on cards instead of buttons. But you can’t pin a card to your shirt to show off at a convention like you could a button, so we needed to devise a solution to maintain the portable and social aspect of the game. We also needed to keep the cost in the much-more-reasonable "under-$40" range. The answer became clear to us after we attended some large conventions: lanyards and badge holders.

Lanyards are ubiquitous at anime, gaming, and other fandom conventions as a way to hold attendee badges. They are often produced and distributed for free by one of the convention sponsors as a way to advertise their business. You’ll also find printed lanyards of your favourite anime/media properties for sale in Hot Topic and other trendy brand-focused stores.

To maintain our game as a portable and social interactive game, and to give Sailor Moon Crystal fans a unique way to show off their love for the series, we include two awesome custom Sailor Moon Crystal lanyards in our Dice Challenge game. One lanyard features super-deformed versions of the Pretty Guardians while the other spotlights the Guardians’ transformation wands. These lanyards are available exclusively in Sailor Moon Crystal Dice Challenge and cannot be purchase separately.

If you’re interested in advertising that you’re open to game challenges while attending an anime/game convention where other potential players may also be attending, you can wear one of the custom lanyards and attach a plastic card holder. Insert into the holder one of the six cute super-deformed challenge cards (that indicate you’re ready to play) facing out on one side and your character card of choice (from the 24 included in the game) facing out the other side. And of course, be sure to carry the eight (or so) polyhedral dice associated with your favourite character card in your pocket too.

Anytime you see a fellow convention attendee also wearing a Dice Challenge lanyard and game card holder, you can approach them and challenge them to a quick dice battle (that typically last only 5-10 minutes). It’s a great way to have fun meeting people, playing the game, and showing the world that you’re a Sailor Moon Crystal fan! This strategy is particularly valuable if the convention (or other game gathering) is running a Sailor Moon Crystal Dice Challenge tournament that spans multiple hours or even days. The rulebook contains additional details about tournament structures.

One last suggestion: even if you don’t intend to play the Sailor Moon Crystal Dice Challenge game at a convention, you can always use the custom Sailor Moon Crystal lanyards to hold your convention badge instead of the lanyard (or even worse, string or metal chain!) that the convention provides. Your lanyard will stand out in the crowd and mark you as a refined Sailor Moon Crystal fan!

So what are you waiting for? Pre-order the Sailor Moon Dice Challenge today and have your lanyards and game ready to go for the spring/summer convention season!

Transformation of the Sailor Moon Crystal Dice Challenge

Origins of Sailor Moon Dice Challenge

We thought it might be of interest to gamers and Sailor Moon Crystal fans to talk about briefly the origins and history of our Dice Challenge game.

In 1999, James Ernest of Cheapass Games released an innovative abstract game called Button Men in which players simulated battles through dice roll-and-capture mechanics. Each product in the Button Men line featured two buttons with game stats and rules, but no dice were included. Why buttons? The genius behind James’s design created not just a simple tabletop game but a social game as well. Gamers would wear their favourite button at conventions, which served as a notification to other Button Men fans that they were looking to accept challenges and engage in dice battles with complete strangers. The buttons promoted the game actively and created a community of Button Men fans. James was awarded with the Origins Award for Best Abstract Board Game for his efforts.

Mark MacKinnon (Dyskami’s founder) was CEO of a tabletop RPG company called Guardians Of Order at that time and was enjoying great success with his Sailor Moon Role-Playing Game and Resource Book. Mark thought that a Sailor Moon expansion to Button Men would be a great product for both fans and gamers and approached James to co-design a set of Button Men compatible buttons (and also asked animation producer DIC Entertainment for another Sailor Moon game license) to produce it. In 2000, Guardians Of Order released the first 12 buttons of the game that was simply titled Sailor Moon Button Men, emphasising characters from the first season of the TV show. Two buttons - a heroine and a villain - were packaged in each set and six sets were produced. A year later, Mark and James co-designed a second set of six button pairs that focused on the second season of Sailor Moon. Guardians Of Order continued selling the twelve Sailor Moon Button Men sets until their licence with DIC came to a conclusion several years later.

Fast forward to 2013. After nearly a decade working outside the gaming industry, Mark founded Dyskami Publishing to re-enter the market and create and publish tabletop games. Eternally a Sailor Moon fan, Mark devised a business plan to reacquire a license to create Sailor Moon Crystal tabletop games. Mark thought it would be a great idea to relaunch Sailor Moon Button Men in a new product form as Dyskami’s first Sailor Moon Crystal offering. Details were still forming in his head, but Mark knew he had to reach out to Cheapass Games early to ensure James would permit a modified re-release of the game. To paraphrase their phone call:

Mark: Hi James, it’s been a long time since we talked!
James: It sure has, old friend. What’s up?
Mark: I’m publishing tabletop games now. If I can get a Sailor Moon Crystal license from Toei, I was thinking about reformatting and rereleasing Sailor Moon Crystal Button Men. Would you be OK with that?
James: Funny, I was recently thinking that Cheapass should relaunch our own Button Men game too.
Mark: Wow, coincidence! I don’t want to use buttons, though. I was thinking cards this time.
James: I was thinking cards too.
Mark: Cool! And instead of only two characters in a set, I want to release a single deck of dozens of characters at once.
James: Wow, that’s exactly what I was going to do.
    Mark & James: Same!

Although it took a few years of communication and negotiation for Dyskami to acquire a Sailor Moon Crystal license from Toei, Mark and James knew that co-operatively relaunching their games close to each other would be great for gamers and fans. Mark rebalanced and tweaked the character stats and added both multi-player and tournament rules, but the new game would be substantially similar to his original 2000 release. Cheapass decided to keep the Button Men name since it ties in with the combative origins of mobster “button men”, but Mark though a separately branded game would be more streamlined and less confusing for Dyskami's release. Similar game, different name.

Thus, Sailor Moon Crystal Dice Challenge was born.

SAILOR MOON CRYSTAL DICE CHALLENGE NOW AT THE PRINTER

    Sailor Moon Crystal Logo

Sometimes, plans aren't always executed as smoothly as anticipated. And sometimes, that kinda sucks.

When we announced to the world that we would be releasing a line of Sailor Moon Crystal tabletop games, we were SUPER EXCITED!!!!!! We believed that we could deliver the first game, Sailor Moon Crystal Dice Challenge, in late summer. Unfortunately, getting the exact manufacturing specifications right to produce the highest-quality game for Sailor Moon fans and gamers alike took much more time than we expected. But we want it NAOW!

We thought we found the right factory partner in the fall (a little late, but not too bad) and were jumping for joy to move into production, but after reviewing several prototypes it was clear that we would not be satisfied with the final quality of the game. We were crushed. Here were were, holding a prototype of the first Sailor Moon Crystal tabletop game EVER in our hands and it just ... wasn't ... good ... enough. Not for us and certainly not for you.

We are extremely sorry for the delay. We know many of you have been waiting to grab your copy of the game and expected more from us. Though we were (and still are) disappointed, we know that a delayed high-quality game is much better than a rushed low-quality one. Consequently, we parted ways with the printer and began the search for a new factory partner. We excited to announce that we believe we have now found the right one and are working closely with the factory and Toei Animation's approval department to meet our high manufacturing standards.

With a new plan in place, we now anticipate that Sailor Moon Crystal Dice Challenge will be ready to ship to customers and stores across Canada and America in spring 2018. So it's coming soon! The second game release, Sailor Moon Crystal Truth or Bluff, will follow shortly thereafter in mid-2018 if the stars and moon align as we expect.

Early in the new year once we are more confident with our manufacturing and shipping timeline, we will be posting information about our crowdfunding pre-order plans for Dice Challenge. We have some exciting things for Sailor Moon Crystal fans coming up, and we want to say thank you so very much for your continued support. Publishing Power - Make Up!

    Jeff Mackintosh has passed

    Jeff Mackintosh Has Passed

It is with great sadness that we relay the news that our dear, dear friend and Art Director, Jeff Mackintosh, passed away last night (12:15 am on Saturday, September 24th) after his long and courageous battle with cancer. Jeff was an inspiration to everyone who knew him and a great all-around guy. We will miss him terribly.

Having the opportunity to work with Jeff again was one of the reasons we decided to found Dyskami Publishing. He handled the art direction and graphic production of Upon a Fable, Warband: Against the Darkness, and our upcoming Q2 2017 game that we haven't announced yet.

During his years working in the gaming industry with Guardians of Order, Jeff's work was received with much critical acclaim, earning him numerous industry accolades. During the 2001 Origins Awards, Jeff competed against himself when he received two nominations in the same category (Best RPG Graphic Design) for his work on Big Eyes, Small Mouth 2nd Edition and the Tench Muyo RPG. He was a gamer geek at heart and lived life with passion.

Jeff is survived by his parents, Dorothy and Ian, and his sister, Tracy.

We loved Jeff and will miss him terribly.

Below is the tribute we paid to him in Warband: Against the Darkness shortly after he announced his diagnosis in fall 2014.
